It’s that time of year again when nervous 17 and 18-year-olds across the country are handed that daunting envelope that basically holds the key to your future. I can’t believe that was a whole five years ago for me. In fact, I still surprise myself when I tell people that I’ve been graduated over a year now. I knew that the University of Hull was the right choice for me as soon as I stepped foot on campus. The friendly vibe, the beautiful buildings and the cheap beer suited me down to a tee. If you’re considering going through Clearing to find a place that suits you, here’s why you should take a closer look at Hull.

1. The people.

It may sound corny, but the people really make a place in my experience. And, this is so true when it comes to Hull.

Sure, you might not get on with everyone in your halls or on your course, but, for the most part, I found Hull Uni students to be welcoming, friendly and down-to-earth. In fact, I met some of my best friends on campus and we’ve stuck together through thick and thin.

The same goes for people off campus. The local people in Hull are extremely welcoming. I now live in Hull and, honestly, I often forget that I’m not originally from here. There’s definitely a strong Hull pride amongst the people, but, if you respect and even join in with that, you’ll be part of that family.

And, I think the sense of belonging to a place is really important when you move to a new city or town.

2. Passionate lecturers.

Obviously, I can only speak on behalf of the History Department at Hull but I was lucky to have some of the most dedicated lecturers out there. Yes, there will be a couple of modules that you just don’t quite click with - that’s natural. But, I can say that overall the staff at the University of Hull are passionate and always willing to help you reach your full potential.

Strange story, but one of my old lecturers, who I’m still in contact with, did me a huge favour the other day when she found that my post had been delivered to the wrong house. She’s still going above and beyond even after I’ve graduated – it’s incredible.

3. Beautiful campus.

As I previously mentioned, the campus at the university is insanely beautiful. Some of the historic buildings date back to 1927.

And, of course, they are always adding and improving buildings. In my first year, they had just completed the seven-story library that is now clean, bright and airy to work in.

Good job as well; I spent hours in that thing.

This year, they have recently refurbished Staff House (now called the Canham Turner building) and opened the brand new Allam Medical School.

4. Affordability.

It’s no secret that Hull is cheap to live in. But, this will be music to your ears as a student. On average, a student room will set you back £60-80 per week, bills included. I know that in many other cities, this cost will be doubled or even tripled.

And yes, the alcohol is cheaper here too, which is always a bonus right?

5. Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

If you haven’t heard already, 2017 is the year that we are celebrating Hull as the UK City of Culture. It’s been non-stop fun, with a whole host of art exhibitions, performances, live music, festivals and parties. Come in October and you’ll be able to be a part of it all. The City of Culture title will also benefit the area in years to come; especially the creative and arts scene.

So, if I've convinced you, be sure to check Hull out on results day. Don't be put off by the Clearing process. It's really quite simple. The Hull University website explains it in an easy step-by-step way here.

All you have to do is ring their Clearing number 01482 297000 after receiving your A-Level results. You will be then asked a few questions about who you are and what you want to study.
